A character/scene breakdown is a grid that shows which characters are on stage in which scenes. Directors use it to build the rehearsal schedule, costume designers use it to plan changes, and stage managers use it to know exactly who to call.
This template lists actors and characters down the left and scenes across the top, with a row for page numbers. Mark each cell to show when a character enters, is on stage or exits during the scene. Many stage managers break scenes further into French scenes, starting a new column every time a character enters or exits.
How to use this template
- 1List every actor and the character they play down the left side.
- 2Write a scene number or nickname at the top of each column, and the script pages it covers in the row below.
- 3Mark each cell: +x for enters during the scene, x for on stage, x– for exits during the scene.
- 4Total each row to see how much of the show each actor is in, then build your rehearsal calls from the grid.
