A blocking key is the legend for your prompt book. It defines every abbreviation and symbol you use, so an ASM, a replacement stage manager or a director can read your blocking without asking.
Page one lists twenty-eight common actions with a suggested abbreviation and a column for the symbol you actually use, beside a table of character initials. Page two gives you a ground plan to label the parts of your set and a table for scenery and furniture abbreviations.
How to use this template
- 1Fill in your symbol for each action, or accept the suggested one.
- 2Assign unique initials to every character, especially those with the same first letter.
- 3Label entrances, levels and set pieces on the page-two ground plan.
- 4File the key at the front of the script section of the prompt book.
